BUCOFI: Burundi Coffee

Project initiated by Joselyne Nisabwe, in 2018 for the empowerment and employability of rural women in Burundi.

Joselyne Nisabwe,is a woman native of the Kayanza province,a province renowned for its coffee. The idea came from the family. As farmer and from a family of farmers, Jocelyne’s passion for coffee dates back to her early childhood. As a child, I used to go to the washing station to sell my father’s coffee. But I cannot forget the nights and days spent at washing stations waiting for us to sell the coffee. We spent several days and nights at the washing station, and sometimes we sold coffee cherry A in condition of cherry B

The coffee sector in Burundi had until then remained the prerogative of men and Burundian women, especially rural ones, were not directly involved. I had the idea of this project to allow Burundian women to have the means to meet its needs, since it remains the pillar of the family economy.
Joselyne created the BUCOFI Company in 2018. Currently BUCOFI works with 2.300 coffee farmers, 65% of them being women, and provides health insurance for 1.400 of them. The region of Kayanza produces really clean and crisp coffees and Joselyne is working hard to promote the production of her local community. This special lot was made up of the production from 10 farmers including Joselyne herself.
